Dill performs best in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Insufficient light results in leggy, spindly growth and a less robust flavor profile. Dill is a cool-season annual that thrives in temperatures between 60°F and 80°F, though it can tolerate warmer conditions if provided afternoon shade.
The depth of the pot is crucial because dill develops a long, sensitive taproot. A container must be a minimum of 10 to 12 inches deep to accommodate this root structure and prevent the plant from becoming root-bound and bolting prematurely. The container material should allow for good air exchange, such as unglazed terracotta, and must always have adequate drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
Planting Methods and Soil Preparation
A light, well-draining potting mix is the ideal soil medium for container dill, as garden soil is often too dense and may harbor pathogens. Adding compost enhances the mix by providing nutrients and improving both drainage and water retention. Dill is sensitive to root disturbance due to its taproot, making direct sowing the preferred planting method.
