The primary concern with exposing hematite to water stems from its high concentration of iron. Hematite is essentially a stable form of rust, and introducing moisture provides the necessary component for the iron to undergo further oxidation. This process is exacerbated by prolonged soaking or high humidity, initiating the formation of hydrous iron oxides, which is the definition of true rust.
When the stone reacts with water, the most immediate physical consequence is a loss of the characteristic metallic luster. Over time, the surface develops a reddish-brown residue, which is the visible sign of rust forming. Severe exposure can cause the stone to pit, crumble, or fracture along existing micro-fissures. Even brief exposure can start this degradation, as water penetrates microscopic cracks, allowing oxidation to begin internally.
Daily Care and Safe Cleaning Methods
Because water poses a significant risk to hematite, owners should adopt preventative measures in their daily routine. Remove hematite jewelry before engaging in activities that involve substantial moisture, such as showering, swimming, or washing dishes. Corrosive agents like chlorine in pools or salt in sweat accelerate the oxidation process, making removal before exercise particularly important.
When the stone requires cleaning, a dry method is the safest approach to maintain its finish. Gently wipe the piece with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove surface oils and dust. If a deeper clean is necessary, use a cloth that is only slightly dampened with plain water, avoiding abrasive rubbing. A significant portion of the material sold commercially as “magnetic hematite” is not pure natural hematite but a man-made composite often called Hematine or Hemalyke. This synthetic material contains iron fillers and metal components to achieve its magnetic properties.
