Can Turtles Make Noise and What Do They Mean?

Many people once believed turtles were silent creatures. However, recent scientific discoveries show turtles produce a variety of sounds, despite lacking vocal cords. These vocalizations play a role in communication and expressing various states.

The Secret World of Turtle Sounds

Turtles produce diverse sounds, including hisses, grunts, chirps, clicks, croaks, and purrs. Lacking vocal cords, they create these sounds through other anatomical mechanisms. Hissing, a common sound, results from rapid air expulsion as they retract into their shells.

Grunting sounds are similar, often caused by air escaping the lungs, but they tend to be deeper and shorter than hisses. Some aquatic turtles can also produce sounds underwater, utilizing laryngeal vibrations and movements of a throat bone called the hyoid bone. These underwater sounds are transmitted as vibrations through the water.

Different turtle species exhibit unique sound repertoires. For instance, red-footed tortoises can produce sounds resembling croaks or barks, while male midland painted turtles might create buzzing or chattering noises. Hatchling turtles across various species are known to make soft chirping or clicking sounds, even before emerging from their eggs.

Why Turtles Vocalize

Turtles vocalize for various reasons, primarily for communication within their species. Vocalizations serve purposes such as attracting mates, defending territory, or signaling distress.

During mating rituals, many male turtles vocalize to attract females, producing sounds like grunts, moans, or clucking noises. Larger tortoise species, such as Aldabra giant tortoises, are particularly known for their loud mating groans. These sounds can travel considerable distances and are an integral part of their courtship behavior.

Turtles also use sounds as a defensive mechanism or to express fear. Hissing is a common response when a turtle feels threatened or startled, serving as an involuntary reaction rather than an intentional warning. This air expulsion can deter potential predators or communicate discomfort. Some species, like young pig-nosed turtles, may emit shrill cries when captured by predators, possibly as a distress signal to alert others.

Vocalizations can also occur in less obvious contexts. Hatchling turtles communicate from within their eggs, producing chirps, clicks, and other sounds to synchronize their hatching. This coordination increases their chances of survival by allowing them to emerge from the nest together. Additionally, some sounds are involuntary, such as those associated with normal breathing, sniffing, or even during feeding.

When to Pay Attention: Interpreting Turtle Sounds

Observing your turtle’s sounds can provide insights into its well-being, helping distinguish between normal behaviors and potential health concerns. Soft hissing or faint wheezing during regular breathing are typically considered normal sounds for turtles. The common hissing sound produced when a turtle retracts into its shell is also usually a natural, involuntary reaction to being startled or feeling insecure.

However, certain vocalizations can signal underlying problems, particularly respiratory issues. Sounds like persistent clicking, consistent wheezing, or audible gasping may indicate a respiratory infection or dehydration. If a turtle frequently breathes with an open mouth, or its breathing sounds become noticeably louder and more pronounced, it could be a sign of stress, overheating, or difficulty obtaining enough oxygen.

Any significant change in vocalization patterns, or the appearance of unusual sounds, warrants close observation. If these sounds are accompanied by other symptoms such as a runny nose, swollen eyes, lethargy, or a decrease in appetite, it is advisable to consult a veterinarian experienced in reptile care. Prompt attention to these signs can ensure your turtle receives the necessary care to maintain its health.
