The Truth About Tree-Climbing Goats

Goats do not climb smooth, sheer surfaces like a squirrel scaling a vertical trunk. The ability to climb is highly dependent on the tree’s structure and the surrounding environment. They typically only climb trees with gnarled, low-hanging branches and wide-spreading crowns, which offer a natural, stepped pathway.

The trees goats climb most often resemble the steep, rocky slopes they naturally inhabit. They utilize horizontal surfaces and rough bark as footholds, moving with precise, short jumps and careful placements. The behavior is geographically specific, occurring where food scarcity makes the tree’s foliage a desirable target. This climbing is an adaptation to environments where ground-level vegetation is sparse.

The Unique Anatomy That Makes Ascent Possible

The goat’s climbing ability stems from the specialized design of its hooves, which function like natural rock-climbing shoes. Each hoof is cloven, split into two distinct toes that can move independently and spread apart. This dual structure allows the goat to grip uneven surfaces like narrow branches or rock ledges, significantly improving balance.

The exterior of the hoof is a hard, bony wall strong enough to bear the animal’s weight. Inside this tough outer shell is a soft, rubbery pad or sole that provides high-friction traction and acts as a shock absorber. This combination allows the outer rim to dig into irregularities while the inner pad molds to the surface contour, preventing slips. Goats also possess dewclaws, small hooves located higher up the leg that provide additional stability, engaging to act as brakes when climbing steep surfaces.

Why Goats Seek Elevation

The primary drive for goats to seek high ground, whether a cliff face or a tree, is survival. Gaining elevation is a strategy for accessing food sources unavailable to competing herbivores. When low-lying plants are exhausted, the leaves and fruits of trees become an invaluable source of nutrition.

Ascending also serves as a defensive mechanism against predators. By positioning themselves high up, goats gain a superior vantage point to spot threats from a distance. The elevated position deters many predators from attempting a chase, maximizing their chances of survival in harsh landscapes.

The Famous Argan Tree Goats

The most famous example of tree-climbing goats is found in the semi-desert region of southwestern Morocco, where they climb the native Argan tree. The goats are intensely attracted to the Argan fruit, which is small, olive-like, and contains a hard nut. As food on the ground is scarce, the goats will climb as high as ten meters into the thorny, wide-crowned trees to reach the fruit.

This behavior has become integrated into the local production of Argan oil. The goats consume the fleshy outer pulp of the fruit, but they cannot digest the hard inner nut, which contains the oil-rich kernel. These nuts are either spat out or excreted intact by the goats. Local farmers traditionally collect them for processing, giving the goats a unique role in harvesting the valuable cosmetic and culinary oil.
