Dolphins can indeed be pink, a phenomenon most notably observed in the Amazon River Dolphin. These unique freshwater cetaceans, primarily found in South America, stand out with their distinctive coloration. They highlight diverse adaptations within marine mammal species, distinguishing them from their more commonly gray oceanic relatives.

The Amazon River Dolphin

The Amazon River Dolphin, scientifically known as Inia geoffrensis, is the most prominent example of a pink dolphin. This species inhabits the freshwater river systems of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, spanning countries such as Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, and even parts of Guyana. Unlike marine dolphins, these river dwellers possess several adaptations suited to their unique environment. They have an unfused neck vertebrae, allowing them to turn their heads up to 90 degrees, benefiting navigation through flooded forests and around obstacles. Their bodies are robust and flexible, with large, paddle-shaped pectoral fins that provide great maneuverability in shallow, often murky, waters.

Amazon River Dolphins also feature a long, slender snout with sensory whiskers, aiding them in searching for prey on muddy river bottoms. Their diet includes fish, crustaceans, and occasionally small turtles. These dolphins are generally found alone, in mother-calf pairs, or in small groups. Born gray, they gradually acquire their pink coloration as they mature.

Why Some Dolphins Are Pink

The pink coloration observed in Amazon River Dolphins results from several biological and environmental factors. A primary factor is the presence of many capillaries close to the skin’s surface. As blood flows through these vessels, it creates a pinkish hue visible through their translucent skin.

Activity levels and social interactions also influence their color; increased blood flow during excitement or physical exertion makes them appear pinker. Males tend to be pinker than females, partly due to more frequent aggressive interactions, which can lead to scar tissue that accumulates and contributes to their coloration. Environmental factors also play a role, with theories suggesting that diet, such as carotenoid-rich fish and crustaceans, might contribute to their pigmentation, similar to flamingos.

Beyond the Amazon: Other Pinkish Hues

While the Amazon River Dolphin is known for its pink hue, other dolphins can also appear pink, though for different reasons. Albino dolphins, regardless of species, often appear pale pink or white due to a genetic lack of melanin. In these cases, the pink tint comes from blood vessels showing through their unpigmented skin. For example, “Pinky,” a well-known albino bottlenose dolphin in Louisiana, displays this characteristic.

Marine dolphins, such as bottlenose dolphins, can also temporarily flush pink. This occurs when blood rushes to the surface of their skin, often during periods of excitement, intense physical activity, or when in warmer waters. This physiological response helps them regulate their body temperature. While this temporary flushing gives them a pinkish appearance, it differs from the consistent, permanent coloration of the Amazon River Dolphin.
