One of the most common causes is dehydration, where urine becomes highly concentrated with minerals and waste products. When fluid intake is insufficient, these concentrated substances reduce the water-to-solid ratio, making the urine appear darker and opaque.
Dietary choices can also impact urine appearance by changing its chemical composition. A diet high in purines (found in red meat and certain seafood) can increase uric acid levels, leading to the formation of crystals. Consuming foods rich in phosphates, such as dairy products, can result in harmless phosphate crystals that temporarily cloud the urine. These crystals are a common finding during urinalysis and do not indicate a disease state.
Beyond diet and hydration, other health conditions can cause this symptom. These include kidney stones, which are mineral deposits that can shed tiny fragments or cause infection. For men, inflammation or issues with the prostate gland can lead to cloudy urine due to the mixing of prostatic fluid with urine. A medical professional must examine the urine to determine the underlying cause.
