Gallstones, hardened deposits that block bile ducts, are the most common cause of cholecystitis leading to rupture. This blockage causes bile buildup, increasing pressure and leading to inflammation, tissue damage, or gangrene. Other causes include bacterial or parasitic infections, or trauma.
How a Rupture Becomes Fatal
When the gallbladder ruptures, bile spills into the abdominal cavity, initiating a cascade of severe complications. Bile, essential for digestion, is highly irritating to the peritoneum, the abdominal cavity’s lining. This irritation quickly leads to peritonitis, severe inflammation of the peritoneal lining.
Initially, leaked bile can cause sterile chemical peritonitis, but it often becomes infected rapidly by bacteria from the bile or gastrointestinal tract. This bacterial infection can spread throughout the abdominal cavity. Untreated, this localized infection can progress into a systemic inflammatory response.
The body’s uncontrolled response to infection can result in sepsis, a life-threatening condition where the immune system damages its own tissues and organs.
