Fertilizing Your Dracaena

As fall and winter approach, dracaena plants enter slower growth or dormancy, and nutrient requirements decrease. Reduce fertilization to every 6-8 weeks, or stop entirely, during cooler months to prevent over-fertilization.

Apply the diluted solution to moist soil, ensuring the plant has been recently watered to prevent root burn. Troubleshooting Fertilization Problems
Over-fertilization commonly harms dracaena plants. Symptoms include yellowing leaves, brown or crispy leaf tips, stunted growth, and a white crust on the soil surface from salt buildup. Severe cases may show wilting or leaf drop as roots struggle to absorb water. To correct, flush the soil thoroughly with water, allowing it to drain completely multiple times to wash away excess salts. Removing the top quarter-inch of soil if a crust is present can also help.
Under-fertilization affects a dracaena’s health. Signs of nutrient deficiency include slow or stunted growth, pale green or yellowing leaves, and smaller new leaves. If symptoms appear, establishing a regular fertilization schedule during the active growing season can help the plant recover.
