The average erect penis is about 5.1 to 5.5 inches long (roughly 13.1 cm) and about 4.6 inches around (11.7 cm) in circumference. These numbers come from clinical measurements taken by researchers, not self-reported data, which tends to skew higher. The average flaccid length is about 3.6 inches, with a flaccid circumference of 3.7 inches.
What the Research Actually Shows
The most widely cited clinical dataset comes from a systematic review of over 15,500 men published in BJU International. Researchers pooled measurements from multiple studies and found an average erect length of 13.12 cm (5.17 inches) with a standard deviation of 1.66 cm. Erect circumference averaged 11.66 cm (4.59 inches). These measurements were taken by clinicians, which matters because self-measurement studies consistently produce higher averages.
To put the spread in practical terms: about 68% of men measure between 4.6 and 6.0 inches when erect. Only about 2.5% of men are over 6.9 inches, and 2.5% are under 3.7 inches. That means the vast majority of men fall within a surprisingly narrow range.
Why Most Men Overestimate the Average
In survey research, most men (66%) rated their own penis as “average,” while 22% called it large and 12% called it small. Those numbers roughly track reality, but men’s sense of what “average” actually means tends to be inflated. One older literature review concluded the typical erect length was around 6 inches, a number that persisted in popular culture for years. More rigorous studies with researcher-conducted measurements have since brought that figure down to the low 5-inch range.
Pornography plays a role in the distortion. Most men understand that the penises shown in adult content are atypically large, but repeated exposure still shifts their internal sense of what’s normal. This can lead men to underestimate their own size relative to the population even when they fall squarely within the average range.
How Size Is Measured Clinically
If you want an accurate measurement, use the same method researchers use. Place a ruler or measuring tape along the top of a fully erect penis, starting where the shaft meets the pubic bone. Press the end of the ruler into the pubic bone to push past any fat pad or pubic hair, then measure in a straight line to the tip. This “bone-pressed” method gives the most consistent and comparable result.
For circumference, wrap a flexible measuring tape around the thickest part of the shaft. If your penis has a natural curve, a tape measure will give a more accurate length reading than a rigid ruler.
Does Size Change With Age?
The idea that the penis shrinks significantly with age is mostly a misperception. While decades of aging can account for a slight shortening of perhaps half an inch, the more common issue is that abdominal weight gain hides the base of the penis beneath extra skin and fat. The penis itself hasn’t changed much, but less of it is visible.
Two situations can cause actual, measurable loss of length. Peyronie’s disease, a condition where scar tissue forms inside the penis, can prevent full extension or create a pronounced curve that effectively shortens it. Prostate removal surgery, sometimes performed for prostate cancer, requires removing part of the urethra and can result in a loss of roughly one to two inches.
Why the Number Matters Less Than the Fit
The most practical reason to know your measurements is condom sizing. A standard condom from most major brands is designed to fit a penis between 5 and 7 inches long with a circumference of 4 to 5 inches. That range covers the majority of men comfortably. If your girth falls below 4 inches, a snug-fit condom will provide better contact and reduce the risk of slippage. If you’re above 5 inches in circumference, a larger size will be more comfortable and less likely to break.
A condom that’s too loose or too tight is more likely to fail, so getting the right fit based on your actual girth measurement is more useful than chasing an abstract idea of what’s “normal.”
