Are Whale Sharks Endangered? Why Their Population Is at Risk

The whale shark, Rhincodon typus, is the largest fish in the ocean, a true marvel of marine life. These gentle giants, known for their distinctive spotted patterns, glide through tropical and warm-temperate waters across the globe. Their calm demeanor and impressive size have made them an iconic presence, captivating the imagination of people worldwide.

Understanding Their Status

Despite their imposing size, whale sharks face significant challenges. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List classified the whale shark as Endangered globally in 2016, indicating a high risk of extinction in the wild.

The primary reason for this designation is a substantial decline in their global population. Over the last 75 years, the worldwide whale shark population has decreased by more than 50%. The Indo-Pacific region, accounting for approximately 75% of the global population, has experienced a 63% decline. In the Atlantic, the population decline is estimated to be over 30%.

Pressures on Whale Shark Populations

Several human-induced pressures contribute to the declining numbers of whale sharks. Targeted fisheries and accidental bycatch pose a considerable threat. Historically, whale sharks were hunted for their meat, fins, and oil in some areas, such as India and the Philippines. Even when not directly targeted, these large fish are often caught unintentionally in fishing gear, including purse seines, longlines, and gillnets, intended for other species like tuna. This accidental capture can lead to injury or death.

Vessel strikes represent another significant danger. Whale sharks frequently inhabit areas that overlap with busy shipping lanes, making them vulnerable to collisions with vessels. These collisions can be fatal, and a substantial number of ship strikes may go undetected or unreported, as whale sharks tend to sink if killed. Studies indicate that 92% of their horizontal space use and nearly 50% of their vertical space overlap with large vessel traffic.

Plastic pollution and marine debris also harm whale sharks. As filter feeders, they ingest vast quantities of seawater, which may include microplastics and larger plastic debris. Ingesting plastics can lead to blockages in their digestive systems, reduce nutrient absorption, and expose them to toxic chemicals that accumulate on plastic particles. Large plastic items can cause entanglement.

Climate change is a significant threat. Rising ocean temperatures are projected to increase whale sharks’ metabolic rates and energy needs while depleting their primary food source, zooplankton. Changes in ocean currents and temperatures can also alter the distribution of plankton, forcing whale sharks to migrate into new areas, exposing them to risks like vessel strikes or habitat loss. Coastal development and unregulated tourism activities can also degrade their habitats, disrupt feeding behaviors, and increase the risk of injury from boat traffic.

Protecting the Largest Fish

Addressing the decline of whale shark populations requires a multi-faceted approach involving international cooperation and local action. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) lists whale sharks on Appendix II, which regulates their international trade. Proposals are being considered to move them to CITES Appendix I, which would provide the highest level of protection, strictly prohibiting commercial trade.

Many countries have implemented national protections. Over 45 nations have enacted bans on shark fishing or specific protections for whale sharks. For instance, India and the Philippines introduced protections in the early 2000s, reducing targeted hunting.

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) provide safe havens for whale sharks. These designated areas, such as Hanifaru Bay and Maamigili in the Maldives, offer protected spaces where whale sharks can feed and aggregate, minimizing human impact. Efforts are underway to expand and improve the effectiveness of MPAs, ensuring they cover important whale shark habitats and migration routes.

Sustainable tourism initiatives are also important, transforming interactions into conservation opportunities. Responsible tourism practices, such as maintaining safe distances, avoiding touching the sharks, and limiting boat numbers, minimize disturbance and support local economies. Revenue from well-managed tourism can directly fund conservation efforts and raise public awareness.

Scientific research and monitoring provide information for effective conservation strategies. Researchers use methods like photo-identification, satellite tagging, and genetic analysis to track movements, understand population dynamics, and assess health. These studies inform marine spatial planning and guide actions to mitigate threats. Public awareness and education campaigns are equally important, fostering understanding and encouraging collective action to protect these ocean inhabitants.
