While the overwhelming majority of complex life adheres to a two-eyed arrangement, the answer involves a fascinating blend of mythology, severe biological anomaly, and unique evolutionary adaptations. True, naturally occurring single-eyed creatures are rare, but examples do exist alongside instances where a single eye results from developmental failure or injury.

The Mythological Cyclops

The most famous single-eyed figure is the Cyclops, a monstrous giant from Greek mythology whose name literally translates to “circle-eye.” These figures, like the famous Polyphemus encountered in Homer’s Odyssey, serve as the cultural origin of the concept of a one-eyed creature. The tales depict them as uncivilized shepherds or skilled artisans who forged Zeus’s thunderbolts. The mythological Cyclops is purely fictional, representing a powerful force in ancient storytelling, and remains a product of human imagination, not natural history.

The Condition of Cyclopia

When a single eye is observed in a complex animal, such as a mammal or shark, it is almost always the result of the severe congenital disorder called cyclopia. This condition is the most extreme form of holoprosencephaly, a birth defect where the embryonic forebrain fails to properly divide into two distinct hemispheres, preventing the formation of two separate eye orbits. The result is a single, central eye, or sometimes two eyes fused into one socket. Cyclopia is extremely rare, occurring in about 1 in 100,000 newborns, and is universally associated with profound structural defects. The condition is incompatible with life, meaning affected animals are typically stillborn or die shortly after birth.

Natural Animals with Apparent Single Eyes

Some organisms naturally possess a single eye, though this trait is restricted to simpler life forms and larval stages. The most prominent example is the nauplius larva, the earliest life stage of most crustaceans, including copepods, barnacles, and shrimp. This microscopic larval form possesses a single, median naupliar eye, which is a simple photoreceptor used primarily for light detection and orientation. In some adult copepods, such as the genus Cyclops, this median eye persists as a single, functional structure located centrally on the head, which is an effective evolutionary solution for their environment. The appearance of a single eye can also result from a parasitic relationship, such as the copepod Ommatokoita elongata attaching to the Greenland shark’s cornea, impairing vision in one eye.

Why Bilateral Vision Is the Biological Standard

Evolution overwhelmingly favors the possession of two eyes because of the significant functional advantages they provide. The horizontal separation allows the brain to receive two slightly different images of the same object, known as binocular disparity, which the brain processes to create a unified, three-dimensional perception of the world. This ability, called stereopsis, is crucial for accurate depth perception, which is necessary for tasks like hunting, navigation, and judging distances. Two eyes also offer a larger overall field of view and provide a backup system if one eye is damaged.
