Potatoes, a staple vegetable, exhibit variety in how they grow beneath the soil. Understanding a potato variety’s specific growth pattern is crucial for successful gardening, as it impacts planting methods and ultimate yield. This difference in underground architecture is categorized into two primary growth habits that govern tuber formation.
Understanding Determinate and Indeterminate Potato Growth
The growth habit of a potato plant dictates the location and duration of tuber production. Determinate potato varieties have a concise growth cycle, developing tubers in a single layer close to the original seed piece. Tuber formation ceases shortly after the plant flowers, resulting in quick maturity, often within 70 to 90 days. Because of this pattern, adding more soil around the stem (hilling) will not stimulate additional potato production.
Conversely, indeterminate potato varieties have a longer growing season and a continuous production cycle. These plants form tubers along the stem’s underground sections, called stolons, as the plant grows upward. Indeterminate varieties require repeated hilling throughout the season to bury the developing stem, encouraging new layers of tubers to form higher up. This allows for greater potential yield but necessitates a longer maturation period, typically taking 110 to 135 days.
Classifying Red Potato Varieties
Most red potato varieties fall into the determinate or semi-determinate category. This classification is linked to their maturity rate, as red potatoes are favored for their early-to-mid-season harvest window. While growth habit is a varietal trait, early-maturing varieties like many reds tend to share the determinate pattern.
The Red Norland potato is a prime example, classified as a determinate, early-season variety maturing in approximately 85 days. The Chieftain red potato is also considered determinate, often listed as a mid-season type. Although some sources list the popular Red Pontiac as indeterminate, its mid-season maturity (80–100 days) places it functionally closer to the determinate group. Therefore, the bulk of the harvest for most common red-skinned potatoes is concentrated near the planting depth.
How Growth Habits Influence Cultivation
The determinate nature of most red potato varieties simplifies cultivation and makes them suitable for specific growing methods. Because tubers set in a single, shallow layer, these varieties require only minimal hilling. The primary purpose of mounding soil or mulch around the emerging stems is to prevent sunlight exposure, which causes potatoes to turn green and accumulate the toxic compound solanine.
This single-layer production zone makes determinate red potatoes an excellent choice for container gardening or raised beds with limited depth. Unlike indeterminate types that demand deep soil or vertical structures, determinate varieties thrive in smaller, shallower containers. Planting them about four inches deep with a single covering of soil or mulch to exclude light is often sufficient for a full harvest.
The rapid maturity of these red varieties allows for an earlier harvest, often ready in late spring or early summer. Gardeners can harvest them as small “new potatoes” shortly after flowering begins or wait until the foliage yellows and dies back for larger, mature tubers. This shorter growing cycle is beneficial in regions with short summers or for gardeners aiming for multiple successive plantings.
