The True Nature of a Rabbit’s Diet
Rabbits are herbivores, meaning their diet consists entirely of plant material. In their natural habitats, wild rabbits primarily graze on grasses, hay, and various leafy plants. Rabbit teeth, including both incisors and molars, grow throughout their lives. Chewing fibrous materials like hay is essential for wearing down these teeth naturally, preventing painful overgrowth and dental issues such as spurs or malocclusion. Without sufficient abrasive food, overgrown teeth can cause pain, difficulty eating, and lead to serious health problems.
The high fiber content of their diet, primarily from hay and grass, is also important for maintaining healthy digestive motility. Fiber stimulates the contractions of the intestinal muscles, ensuring food moves smoothly through the digestive tract.
