This higher cost is associated with the labor-intensive organic certification process and the lower yields often seen without synthetic inputs. This cost factor remains a barrier for many consumers looking to switch.

In terms of performance, there is no significant difference in the core function of absorption between organic and conventional tampons of the same rating. Tampons are classified as medical devices, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires all manufacturers to adhere to standardized absorbency ranges. All products must undergo the same testing to label their absorbency as “Light,” “Regular,” or “Super.”

The FDA’s mandated standardization means that a “Regular” organic tampon will absorb the same regulated amount of fluid as a “Regular” conventional tampon. Therefore, the choice between the two is not a compromise on functional performance.
