Mussels: A Diverse Group

The term “mussel” encompasses a broad category of bivalve mollusks. These creatures share general characteristics, such as a two-part hinged shell, which protects their soft body. This feeding method is central to their ecological role in maintaining water quality.

Saltwater Mussels: Their World

Marine mussels, such as the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), thrive in saline conditions. They are often found in intertidal zones and rocky shores. They attach themselves firmly to hard surfaces like rocks, pilings, or other mussels using strong strands called byssal threads. These threads are produced by a byssus gland in the mussel’s foot, providing anchorage against waves and currents. They also contribute to food webs, serving as a food source for various marine animals like crabs, lobsters, fish, and shorebirds. Some species, like the green-lipped mussel, are significant in aquaculture, contributing to food production and the economy.

Freshwater Mussels: Their World

Freshwater mussels inhabit non-saline environments such as rivers, lakes, streams, and ponds. North America has significant freshwater mussel diversity. These mussels burrow into the substrate, preferring stable sand and gravel. Their shells can vary in shape and size, with some species living for decades.

A distinctive aspect of most freshwater mussels is their complex life cycle, which involves a temporary parasitic larval stage called a glochidium. These microscopic larvae attach to the gills, fins, or scales of a host fish. The fish host is crucial for the glochidia to develop into juvenile mussels and for the dispersal of the species to new habitats. Some freshwater mussels have evolved adaptations, such as mantle lures that mimic prey, to attract specific fish hosts. An invasive example, the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha), is a freshwater species known for rapidly colonizing water systems and attaching to various submerged surfaces.

Why Mussels Matter

Mussels are important components of aquatic ecosystems due to their ability to filter water. As filter feeders, they remove suspended particles, algae, bacteria, and excess nutrients from the water, significantly improving water clarity and quality. A single freshwater mussel can filter several gallons of water per day, and dense mussel beds can significantly improve water quality. This filtration process helps prevent eutrophication and maintains overall ecosystem health.

Beyond water purification, mussels play a role in nutrient cycling and energy transfer within food webs. They serve as a food source for various animals, including fish, muskrats, otters, and raccoons. Mussels are also considered bioindicators of environmental health, as their presence and condition can reflect changes in water quality and the accumulation of pollutants. Unfortunately, freshwater mussel populations are at risk, with many North American species considered endangered or extinct due to habitat destruction, pollution, and invasive species like the zebra mussel.
