Are Kiwi Berries Related to Kiwis?

The small, smooth-skinned kiwi berry has recently gained popularity alongside its larger, more familiar relative. These grape-sized fruits look quite different from the typical brown, fuzzy fruit. Both the kiwi berry and the common kiwifruit belong to the same genus, Actinidia, which confirms their botanical relationship. The familiar kiwifruit sold in grocery stores is primarily a cultivar of Actinidia deliciosa, or sometimes Actinidia chinensis (golden varieties). This large, egg-shaped fruit is what most people picture when they hear the name kiwi.

The kiwi berry is typically the fruit of the species Actinidia arguta, often called hardy kiwi, or sometimes Actinidia kolomikta. These different species account for the distinct physical characteristics and growing conditions of the two fruits. The genus Actinidia contains over 50 species of woody vines, all native to Asia.

Practical Distinctions

The most immediate difference is size. The standard kiwifruit is comparable to a large chicken egg, while the kiwi berry is closer to the size of a large grape or cherry. This difference in scale affects how the fruits are consumed. The fuzzy kiwifruit has a thin, fibrous skin that is usually peeled or scooped out before eating.

In contrast, the kiwi berry’s skin is smooth, hairless, and completely edible, eliminating the need for peeling. This smooth exterior makes the kiwi berry a convenient, pop-in-your-mouth snack. The taste profile also differs, as kiwi berries are noted for being sweeter and less acidic than the common kiwifruit, providing a milder flavor. The interior flesh color is similar, generally a vibrant green with tiny, edible black seeds radiating from the center.

Comparison of Nutritional Profiles

Despite their physical differences, both fruits are recognized for their high nutrient density. Both varieties are excellent sources of Vitamin C, though the kiwi berry often contains a slightly higher concentration. For example, Actinidia arguta can contain up to 123 milligrams of Vitamin C per 100 grams, compared to the standard kiwifruit’s 58.5 to 97.7 milligrams.

The common kiwifruit is highlighted for its fiber content, which aids in digestive health, and its significant concentration of Vitamin K. The kiwi berry also contains fiber, but it stands out with nearly double the calcium levels compared to the standard kiwifruit. Both fruits deliver a variety of antioxidants and minerals, solidifying their status as nutritious choices.
