The physical structure of their teeth complements this digestive strategy, featuring sharp incisors to crop grass close to the ground. Their large molars are designed to chop and grind the coarse plant material before it enters the stomach chambers. Due to the abrasive silica content in grasses, these molars wear down and are continually replaced by new teeth that migrate forward in the jaw. Kangaroos are also highly efficient at water reabsorption in their intestines, allowing them to extract maximum moisture from their food and survive for extended periods without drinking in arid environments.

Tree Kangaroos, a distinct group of macropods, have evolved an arboreal lifestyle and a significantly different diet. Found in the tropical rainforests of New Guinea and far northeastern Queensland, these species primarily consume leaves and fruit.
