This measurement provides a more reliable estimate of gestational age, and the EDD is frequently adjusted based on these early ultrasound findings, especially when they differ significantly from the LMP-based date.

In IVF pregnancies, the estimated due date is calculated with greater precision because the exact timing of fertilization is known. Fertility specialists use the date of specific, controlled biological events as the starting point for the 40-week countdown. The calculation method depends on the stage of the embryo when it was transferred into the uterus.

For a fresh cycle, the date of egg retrieval is considered the day of fertilization, and the EDD is calculated by adding 266 days, or 38 weeks, to that date. If the embryo was transferred on Day 3, the EDD is 263 days from the transfer date. For a Day 5 blastocyst transfer, which is a more advanced embryo stage, the EDD is calculated by adding 261 days to the date of transfer. This reliance on known, laboratory-controlled events removes the guesswork associated with natural conception.

Why IVF Due Dates Offer Greater Certainty

IVF due dates are considered more certain because the variables of ovulation and fertilization timing are entirely removed. In a natural cycle, the exact moment the egg is released and subsequently fertilized is a biological mystery that must be estimated based on the LMP. This estimation is often inaccurate due to fluctuating cycle lengths or variations in the timing of ovulation within a given cycle.

Conversely, IVF procedures precisely control the age of the embryo being transferred. The day of egg retrieval marks the known date of fertilization. This certainty provides a more reliable baseline for calculating the EDD compared to the assumptions of the traditional LMP method. Medical protocols ensure consistent dating methods are applied to these known events, providing a highly reliable starting point for the 40-week gestational period.

Despite the precision of the IVF calculation, the estimated due date remains an estimate, and the actual day of birth is still subject to biological variability. The EDD represents the day when the pregnancy reaches 40 completed weeks, but only a small percentage of babies, roughly 4% to 5%, are born on that exact date. The majority of full-term births occur in a window spanning from 37 to 42 weeks of gestation.
