These impressive animals earn their name from their substantial size and the way their legs are held, giving them a distinctly crab-like appearance. The name “Giant Crab Spider” is often used interchangeably with Huntsman spider, which belongs to the scientific family Sparassidae. They are known for their formidable size, with some species, such as those in Australia, reaching a leg span of up to 15 centimeters (about six inches).

A distinguishing physical feature is their flattened body shape, which allows them to hide effectively in narrow crevices, under loose bark, or within wall cracks. Unlike many other spiders, their legs are arranged in a posture called laterigrade, meaning they extend sideways, enabling them to move with rapid, scuttling motions in any direction. They are active predators that chase and subdue their prey rather than relying on a sticky web for capture.

The size and speed of Giant Crab Spiders can make them seem highly threatening, but their venom is generally considered to be of low medical significance to humans. Once inside, their flattened bodies allow them to hide behind furniture, curtains, or in wall voids.

These spiders are characteristically shy and solitary, and their primary instinct upon encountering a perceived threat is to flee rather than attack. Their impressive speed allows them to quickly vacate a situation, and they only bite as a last resort when their escape route is blocked. If one is found indoors, the safest practice is to avoid startling it and gently encourage it into a container for relocation outdoors.

Should a defensive bite occur, first aid is simple and focused on managing the localized reaction. Cleaning the wound thoroughly with soap and water helps prevent secondary infection. Applying a cold compress or ice pack to the affected area can help reduce swelling and alleviate any immediate pain.
