Sudden temperature changes also play a role, particularly when temperatures drop below 55°F or spike above 85°F during the budding stage. Ensuring a stable, consistently moist environment and protecting the plant from rapid thermal shifts are the best ways to prevent this setback. Pests like thrips or aphids feeding on the buds can also cause them to drop prematurely.
Pest Management
Gardenias are susceptible to several common sap-sucking garden pests that can quickly weaken the plant if left unchecked. Aphids, mealybugs, and whiteflies are frequent invaders, thriving particularly in lower humidity environments. These pests extract plant fluids, leading to yellowing foliage and general decline.
Regular inspection of the undersides of the glossy leaves is necessary to catch infestations early. Non-chemical treatments, such as horticultural oil or insecticidal soap, are effective for control and should be applied thoroughly to cover the pests.
