While safe when ingested, when heated and inhaled, this oil breaks down into toxic ketenes that coat the lungs, causing severe injury. Other diluents like Propylene Glycol or Vegetable Glycerin can also produce irritating or toxic breakdown products when heated to high temperatures. Another major concern is the potential for heavy metal contamination, which can leach from the device’s heating coil and internal components.

Metals such as lead, nickel, chromium, and cadmium can be released into the vapor, especially as the device ages or operates at higher temperatures. Inhaling these heavy metals poses a risk to multiple body organs and can contribute to pulmonary issues. Consumers must rely on manufacturer transparency to ensure product safety, making third-party lab testing a non-negotiable requirement.
