Soil with a higher, alkaline pH binds these nutrients, making them unavailable to the plant’s roots. Azaleas are not heavy feeders and require minimal fertilization if mulched regularly with organic material. If necessary, use a product formulated for acid-loving plants, typically a slow-release formula with a balanced or low-nitrogen NPK ratio. When azaleas show signs of distress, the cause is often environmental stress, which can be identified by specific visual cues. A common issue is iron chlorosis, which appears as new leaves turning pale green or yellow while the veins remain distinctly green. This symptom indicates that the soil pH is too high (alkaline), preventing the plant from accessing iron. Corrective measures include applying sulfur or iron sulfate to lower the soil pH or using a temporary fix with chelated iron compounds.
The azalea lace bug is a sucking insect that feeds on the underside of leaves. Their feeding causes a characteristic stippling or bleaching on the upper leaf surface, eventually taking on a grayish or bronzed appearance. Checking the leaf undersides reveals the tiny, lacy-winged adults and dark, varnish-like fecal spots. Control involves applying insecticidal soaps or horticultural oils directly to the leaf undersides, where the pests reside.
Fungal diseases like petal blight, caused by the fungus Ovulinia azaleae, target the flowers, especially during cool, wet weather. Initial symptoms are small spots on the petals that rapidly enlarge, causing the entire flower to turn brown, soft, and mushy while remaining attached to the shrub. Management focuses on cultural practices, such as removing all infected flowers and debris immediately to prevent the spread of spores. Fungicides can be used preventatively as buds begin to show color in gardens with a history of the disease.
