Chemical signals, or pheromones, are widely used by social insects like ants to mark trails to food sources or by mammals like wolves to mark territory during breeding seasons. Visual displays involve body language, gestures, and changes in coloration. For example, a chimpanzee might display a “fear grin” to acknowledge a dominant male, and cuttlefish can change their color for courtship or to appear threatening.
