ACLS Skills Session: What to Expect and How to Prepare

The Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Skills Session is the mandatory, in-person, hands-on component required after completing the online didactic portion (HeartCode). This session verifies a learner’s competency in performing physical skills and applying complex treatment algorithms in a simulated environment. It moves beyond theoretical knowledge, focusing instead on psychomotor skills, team dynamics, and efficient decision-making under pressure. Successfully completing this practical session is the final step necessary to earn the official ACLS Provider certification card.

Preparing for the HandsOn Session

Preparation involves administrative readiness before arriving at the training center. You must ensure you have completed the online HeartCode and bring the required course completion certificate to your session. A Precourse Self-Assessment (PCA) must also be passed, demonstrating a baseline understanding of electrocardiogram (ECG) rhythm recognition and pharmacology. Reviewing the core ACLS algorithms will prime your clinical decision-making pathway. Since the session requires physical performance, such as chest compressions, wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is recommended for unrestricted movement.

Overview of the Core Skills Stations

The session begins with an evaluation of core skills, often conducted at separate learning stations. A primary focus is High-Quality Basic Life Support (BLS), where you must demonstrate effective chest compressions that meet the parameters of 100 to 120 compressions per minute and a depth of at least two inches (five centimeters). This skill is often measured using a feedback device, which provides real-time data on performance metrics, including minimizing interruptions to maintain a high Chest Compression Fraction (CCF). Another station involves Airway Management, requiring competency in utilizing a bag-valve mask (BVM) to provide ventilations and inserting adjuncts like the oropharyngeal (OPA) or nasopharyngeal airway (NPA). You will also be tested on the ability to interpret common cardiac rhythms and correctly set up a defibrillator or synchronized cardioverter.

Navigating the Megacode Scenario

The Megacode represents the culmination of the ACLS course, serving as an integrated simulation where you assume the role of the team leader. This scenario tests your ability to apply the algorithms systematically, manage time, and coordinate a resuscitation team through a complex cardiac emergency. A key element evaluated by the instructor is communication, requiring the use of closed-loop communication to delegate tasks clearly and confirm completion. You must efficiently identify the rhythm, announce the appropriate algorithm pathway, and direct the timing of drug administration. Prioritizing continuous, high-quality chest compressions must remain the central focus, even as other advanced interventions are performed. The instructor is evaluating your ability to demonstrate effective leadership and systematic decision-making, rather than just isolated technical skills.

Evaluation and Certification

Successful completion requires passing all individual skills stations and demonstrating effective team leadership and algorithm application during the Megacode scenario. Once the instructor verifies competency in all required areas, the certification process is finalized. You will receive an official American Heart Association (AHA) e-card notification shortly after the session, with the certification valid for two years. If a minor error occurs during the practical testing, instructors offer immediate coaching and the opportunity for retesting rather than requiring a full re-enrollment. This remediation process ensures skill mastery before the final card is issued.
