The availability of fresh grass and water drives the migratory patterns of many zebra populations. During the dry season, when grasses wither and water becomes scarce, zebras undertake long journeys in search of renewed pastures. The Serengeti-Mara ecosystem hosts a massive annual migration where plains zebras move alongside other herbivores, following seasonal rains. Habitat loss, often due to human activities like farming and livestock grazing, increasingly threatens their access to essential grazing lands and traditional migration routes.
Ecological Importance of Zebra Grazing
Zebra grazing significantly shapes grassland ecosystems. They are “pioneer grazers,” consuming taller, coarser grass. This clears older growth, making way for fresh, shorter grasses that benefit other selective grazers like wildebeest and gazelles. Their grazing prevents the dominance of certain plant species, promoting overall plant diversity and a mosaic of short and tall grasses within the savanna.
Zebras also contribute to nutrient cycling. As they consume plant matter and move, they distribute nutrients back into the soil through their waste, acting as natural fertilizers. As primary consumers, they are a significant food source for predators like lions, hyenas, and wild dogs, which helps maintain carnivorous populations. Their grazing habits can also influence water availability by creating depressions that collect rainwater, and their hooves break up soil, allowing water to penetrate the ground.
