Inspect stems for abnormalities and check soil moisture a few inches below the surface. Healthy roots appear creamy-white; damaged ones are brown or mushy.

Next, consider recent changes in care or environmental conditions. Review your watering schedule, temperature fluctuations, or if the tree has been relocated. Recent repotting can also cause temporary drooping due to transplant shock.

Use a process of elimination, starting with common causes. Watering issues are frequent culprits; assess soil moisture by inserting a finger 2-4 inches deep. If dry, underwatering is likely; if soggy, overwatering and potential root rot are concerns. If watering seems appropriate, check for pests, light, or temperature stress.

Proactive Care and Prevention

Proper watering techniques are foundational for avocado tree health. Water deeply, allowing the top few inches of soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. Checking soil moisture by hand or with a moisture meter ensures proper watering.

Providing optimal environmental conditions helps prevent stress. Avocado trees thrive in full sun and prefer temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Shielding young trees from intense direct sun or extreme cold prevents leaf damage.

Maintaining soil health promotes robust growth. Ensure the tree is planted in well-draining soil, amending heavy clay soils with organic matter or sand to improve aeration. Applying organic mulch around the tree, a few inches from the trunk, helps retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.

Balanced nutrient management supports tree vigor. Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release product, ideally one formulated for citrus trees, but avoid over-fertilizing young trees. Regular monitoring for pests and diseases allows for early detection and intervention, preventing issues from escalating.
