What We Can Learn From a Dodo Bird Fossil

The dodo bird, Raphus cucullatus, remains one of the most widely recognized symbols of extinction, captivating public imagination despite its absence from the modern world. This flightless bird, once unique to the island of Mauritius, continues to inspire curiosity about its appearance, behavior, and the circumstances that led to its disappearance. The limited physical evidence available, primarily in the form of fossil remains, provides scientists with a challenging puzzle to piece together the true story of this enigmatic creature.

The Dodo’s Extinction and Discovery

The dodo inhabited Mauritius, an island located east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, for millions of years without natural predators. This isolated environment allowed the bird to evolve into a large, flightless species, reaching approximately one meter in height and weighing between 10.6 and 17.5 kilograms. Dutch sailors first documented the dodo’s existence upon arriving on the island in 1598, marking the beginning of its rapid decline.

The dodo’s fearlessness and inability to fly made it an easy target for human hunters. Introduced invasive species like rats, cats, dogs, and pigs devastated the dodo population by preying on eggs and chicks, and destroying habitats. The last confirmed sighting was in 1662, and by the 1700s, the species was extinct.

Scarcity of Dodo Fossils

Despite its prominent place in popular culture, complete dodo skeletal remains are rare. The island’s climate and rapid decomposition contributed to the scarcity of specimens. Before the mid-19th century, its existence was questioned, as only isolated remains, such as a head and foot in Oxford, and skulls in Prague and Copenhagen, were known from birds brought to Europe.

The most significant fossil discoveries occurred at Mare aux Songes, a swampy area in southeastern Mauritius. In 1865, George Clark uncovered an abundance of dodo bones there. Subsequent excavations, including one in 2005, have yielded bones from over 300 dodos, deposited during a severe drought approximately 4,200 years ago when animals became trapped seeking water. These findings, although extensive, often consist of disarticulated bones, with few complete skulls or wing bones.

The Oxford Dodo, housed at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, represents the most complete individual specimen with surviving soft tissue. Cataloged in 1656, this specimen includes a skull, a foot, skin, and traces of feathers, providing insights. Recent high-resolution scans revealed lead shot embedded in its skull, suggesting the bird was killed.

Reconstructing the Dodo

Scientists have relied on fossil evidence, combined with early illustrations and written accounts, to reconstruct the dodo’s appearance and behavior. Subfossil remains indicate the dodo stood between 62.6 and 75 centimeters tall. Early depictions, such as those by 17th-century Dutch painters, often portrayed the dodo as a plump, obese bird, influencing public perception.

Analysis of dodo bones suggests a leaner build than commonly depicted, with strong legs capable of speed. The dodo’s large, hooked beak, delivering a powerful bite, was likely its primary defense. Although flightless, well-developed muscle scars on their small wing bones indicate these appendages were not vestigial and may have been used for display or balance.

Studies of bone structure, including growth rings, reveal the dodo’s life cycle. The breeding season began around August, with chicks growing rapidly to near-adult size before the stormy Mauritian summer. During these months, food shortages due to heavy rains and winds caused arrested growth lines in their bones, indicating hardship.
