However, in cultivated environments, especially with newly planted trees, those in poor soil, or trees showing nutrient stress, supplemental fertilization can be beneficial.

Signs of nutrient deficiency include yellowing leaves, stunted growth, or sparse foliage. For instance, a nitrogen deficiency appears as lighter green or yellow leaves. Soil testing is the most effective way to determine nutrient deficiencies and a redwood’s precise needs, preventing unnecessary or harmful applications.

If soil analysis indicates a need for fertilization, choosing an appropriate product is the next step. Other common mistakes include applying fertilizer to dry soil, which increases the risk of root burn, or placing it too close to the trunk, potentially damaging sensitive bark and surface roots.
