He opened a new store in San Francisco in 1852, which became the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. This establishment officially incorporated in 1852, making it the third-oldest chocolate company in the U.S. By 1866, the company imported significant quantities of cocoa seeds, expanding its offerings beyond chocolate to include coffee and spices for markets spanning the U.S., China, Japan, and Mexico.
A significant innovation occurred in 1865 with the discovery of the Broma process by a Ghirardelli employee. This method improved cocoa butter extraction and led to a more intense chocolate flavor. In 1892, Domenico Ghirardelli retired, passing management to his three sons.
