If twins share a single placenta and a single amniotic sac (monochorionic/monoamniotic), they are definitively identical.
When twins have separate placentas and sacs (dichorionic/diamniotic), they could be either fraternal or identical, as some identical twins divide early enough to develop separate structures. Appearance after birth is not a conclusive method. The most accurate way to definitively distinguish twin types is through genetic testing, which compares the twins’ DNA profiles to determine if they are an exact match. This test involves collecting a cheek swab sample from each twin.
