These can include a blue dye, a strong odor (stenching agent), and an emetic to induce vomiting if swallowed. Labels typically include hazard statements such as “DANGER—POISON” or “FATAL IF SWALLOWED OR INHALED,” often accompanied by a skull and crossbones symbol. The label also outlines precautions for use, personal protective equipment requirements, and first aid measures in case of exposure. Restricted Access and Use of Paraquat Products
Products containing paraquat are classified as Restricted Use Pesticides (RUPs) by regulatory bodies like the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This classification signifies that these products are not available for purchase or use by the general public. Instead, their sale and application are limited to individuals who are certified applicators.
Certified applicators undergo specialized training and must demonstrate competence in handling and applying these chemicals. Unlike many other restricted-use pesticides, paraquat products prohibit non-certified individuals from using them, even under the direct supervision of a certified applicator.
