Natural diamonds possess distinct physical and chemical properties. Their most recognized attribute is unparalleled hardness, rating 10 on the Mohs scale, making them the hardest known natural material. This hardness results from the strong covalent bonds between carbon atoms in their tightly packed crystal structure.
Diamonds also exhibit high thermal conductivity, surpassing that of most metals, and are efficient electrical insulators. These properties stem from the efficient transfer of vibrational energy through their rigid atomic lattice and the absence of free electrons. Their high refractive index of 2.417 and moderate dispersion of 0.044 contribute to their brilliance and “fire”—the ability to split white light into spectral colors. Identifying natural diamonds relies on distinctive characteristics that arise from their unique formation process. Trace elements, such as nitrogen or boron, are often incorporated into the diamond’s crystal structure during natural growth, influencing its color or type. Gemological laboratories employ advanced scientific instruments to analyze these features.
