The World’s Rarest Fish
The Devil’s Hole Pupfish, Cyprinodon diaboli, is widely considered one of the world’s rarest fish due to its confined natural habitat. This tiny species is found exclusively in Devil’s Hole, a water-filled limestone cavern located within the Amargosa Desert in Nevada. The cavern plunges to depths exceeding 130 meters, but the pupfish primarily inhabits the upper 24 meters of the water column.
The aquatic environment within Devil’s Hole is stable, maintaining a constant temperature of around 33 degrees Celsius (91-93 degrees Fahrenheit) year-round. Dissolved oxygen levels are low, a challenging environment for most fish. A small, shallow rock shelf, approximately 3.5 by 5 meters in area, serves as the primary feeding and spawning ground for the entire population.
Physically, the Devil’s Hole Pupfish is the smallest among pupfish species, typically measuring about 23 millimeters (0.9 inches) in length, up to a maximum of 30 millimeters (1.2 inches). Males exhibit a striking metallic blue coloration, particularly vibrant during breeding, while females and juveniles are more yellowish. A distinguishing feature is its complete lack of pelvic fins.
The pupfish’s diet is varied, consuming nearly all available food sources within Devil’s Hole. This includes algae (diatoms and Spirogyra), freshwater crustaceans (Hyalella azteca and ostracods), beetles, and snails. They also consume inorganic particulate matter. The pupfish also exhibits “paradoxical anaerobism,” allowing them to temporarily forego breathing oxygen for up to two hours, an adaptation to their low-oxygen environment.
Reproduction occurs throughout the year, with peak activity observed in spring and fall. Females produce a limited number of eggs, resulting in low survival rates from egg to adult. Their average lifespan is typically between 10 and 14 months. Daily and seasonal movements show them leaving the shallow shelf during midday, especially from April through September, when sunlight intensity is highest.
Protection efforts for the Devil’s Hole Pupfish began in the late 1940s, with President Harry S. Truman designating Devil’s Hole as part of Death Valley National Monument in 1952. The species was officially listed as endangered in 1967, among the first protected under the Endangered Species Act. A 1976 Supreme Court ruling further solidified protections by limiting groundwater pumping that threatened Devil’s Hole water levels. Despite conservation efforts, the population has fluctuated, reaching a low of 35 individuals in 2013, but rebounded to 191 in April 2024, marking a 25-year high. Ongoing conservation strategies include supplemental feeding and establishing a replica habitat to support the species.
Understanding Fish Rarity and Conservation
Fish become rare or endangered due to a combination of environmental pressures.
