The markings, or graduations, typically indicate volumes in milliliters (mL), making it a widely used tool in scientific fields.

The graduated cylinder’s primary role is to accurately measure liquid volumes. To obtain an accurate reading, position your eye level directly with the bottom of this concave meniscus. Some graduated cylinders offer higher precision for more critical work.

Distinguishing It from Other Labware

A graduated cylinder serves a distinct purpose compared to other common laboratory glassware like beakers, Erlenmeyer flasks, and volumetric flasks. Graduated cylinders are also not typically used for heating or mixing chemicals due to their tall, slender design, which can make them less stable and prone to tipping or uneven heating.
