Popping a blister can introduce bacteria, increasing the risk of infection and potentially slowing healing.

Cover the area with a sterile, non-stick gauze bandage, such as one with petrolatum or Adaptic-type material, ensuring it is wrapped loosely to avoid pressure on the burned skin.

Dressings should be changed daily or whenever they become wet or dirty to maintain a clean environment. When changing dressings, gently wash the wound with mild soap and water to remove any old ointment or debris. Hydrogel or hydrocolloid dressings can be beneficial for second-degree burns, as they help maintain a moist healing environment and protect against contaminants. Protecting the burn from friction and further injury is important for uninterrupted healing.

Signs of Complication and Medical Attention

While many blistered burns can be managed at home, it is important to recognize signs indicating a complication or the need for professional medical attention. Changes in the burn’s appearance or increasing pain can signal a problem. Signs of infection include increased redness, swelling, warmth around the burn, pus or foul-smelling discharge, or a fever.

Seek immediate medical care for large blisters, or if the burn covers sensitive areas such as the face, hands, feet, genitals, or major joints.
