The Ogallala Aquifer is a shallow water table aquifer composed of sand, silt, clay, and gravel. It underlies approximately 174,000 square miles across eight U.S. states: South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. Its maximum depth can reach 1,000 feet in some areas, but the average saturated thickness is 100 to 300 feet, with regions like the Texas High Plains averaging about 95 feet.

The aquifer formed over millions of years, largely from the late Miocene to early Pliocene epochs. During this period, sediments like sand, gravel, silt, and clay eroded from the Rocky Mountains and were transported eastward by ancient river systems. These materials filled channels and covered the High Plains, forming the porous Ogallala Formation that holds vast quantities of water. Much of the water is “paleowater,” accumulated over millennia from ancient rainfall and glacial meltwater, as its natural recharge from current precipitation is extremely slow, sometimes less than an inch per year.

The Aquifer’s Vital Role

The Ogallala Aquifer plays a central role in sustaining agriculture across the Great Plains, transforming a semi-arid region into a productive farming area. It serves as the primary source of irrigation water for a substantial portion of U.S. agriculture, providing about 30% of U.S. groundwater used for irrigation. This extensive irrigation supports the cultivation of major crops such as corn, wheat, and cotton, which are important to the national food supply.

Beyond crop production, the aquifer is also instrumental in supporting the nation’s livestock industry. Its groundwater has enabled the growth of ranching and feedlot operations. It also provides drinking water for millions within its boundaries. The economic output from agriculture and related industries, directly dependent on the aquifer, is estimated at tens of billions of dollars annually.

Depletion and Its Consequences

Despite its immense size, the Ogallala Aquifer is experiencing water level declines due to unsustainable extraction rates. Water is being pumped out, primarily for intensive agricultural irrigation, far exceeding the aquifer’s natural recharge rate. This imbalance is pronounced since the post-World War II era, with technologies like center-pivot irrigation enabling large-scale farming in arid areas. Climate change also contributes to this challenge by increasing crop water demands and potentially reducing effective recharge.

Since 1950, the saturated volume of the aquifer has been reduced by 9%. Some areas have seen water levels drop by over 100 feet, with declines exceeding 250 feet in parts of Texas. The water table can fall by five feet annually in some locations. If current extraction rates continue, some parts of the aquifer could be depleted this century, and natural replenishment could take over 6,000 years.

Falling water tables necessitate drilling deeper wells and increase pumping costs, increasing energy requirements. Many wells are drying up, impacting farmers and communities. Reduced groundwater levels can also lead to decreased flows in surface streams and rivers, affecting ecosystems and biodiversity.

Land subsidence is also a risk in some areas. Water quality can also deteriorate as remaining water becomes more concentrated with dissolved solids or nitrates. Economically, depletion threatens agricultural production, potentially leading to reduced crop acreage, shifts to less water-intensive dryland farming, and negative impacts on regional economies and rural communities.

Protecting This Precious Resource

Addressing the depletion of the Ogallala Aquifer involves a multi-faceted approach, integrating technology, agricultural practice changes, and policy efforts. Precision irrigation techniques, like drip irrigation and sprinklers, deliver water directly to plant roots, minimizing waste from evaporation and runoff. Deficit irrigation strategies, applying less water than a crop’s full potential needs while maintaining acceptable yields, also contribute to water savings.

Other conservation methods include developing drought-resistant crop varieties and implementing conservation tillage practices that enhance soil moisture retention. Technologies like soil moisture sensors and remote sensing provide real-time data to optimize irrigation schedules and water application. Policy initiatives, like state-level regulations and local water conservation districts, aim to manage water use more effectively. Federal programs, such as the Ogallala Aquifer Initiative, offer technical and financial assistance to farmers for water-saving practices.
