Derived from the Latin word “adjuvare,” meaning “to help,” an adjuvant improves the body’s response to another administered substance. This addition aims to elicit a stronger, more targeted, or more durable outcome than the primary substance would achieve on its own.

The Function of an Adjuvant

Medical adjuvants primarily function by stimulating the body’s innate immune system. This activation creates a localized alert at the site of administration, drawing immune cells like antigen-presenting cells to the area. Common, mild side effects after an adjuvanted vaccine, such as soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site, are often signs that the adjuvant is successfully activating the local immune system.
