Features of the Largest Bear

Adult male Kodiak bears can weigh up to 1,500 pounds (680 kg) at peak times and stand over 10 feet tall on their hind legs. While some sources suggest Kodiak bears are generally larger than polar bears, the largest polar bears on record surpass the largest Kodiak bears.

Another large brown bear subspecies is the grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis), primarily found in North America. Grizzly bears, especially coastal populations, can be quite large, with males averaging 400 to 600 pounds (180 to 300 kg) and reaching lengths of up to 8 feet (2.44 meters). However, they are typically smaller than both polar bears and Kodiak bears.

Determinants of Bear Size

Several factors contribute to the size of certain bear species.
