Anacondas, with their immense size and powerful constriction, have long captured human imagination, inspiring tales of colossal serpents lurking in South American waterways. These semi-aquatic predators are widely recognized among the largest snakes globally. Their formidable reputation leads to curiosity about their maximum dimensions and the biggest anaconda on record.
Anaconda Species and Their Sizes
The genus Eunectes encompasses four recognized anaconda species, each varying in size and habitat. The Green Anaconda (Eunectes murinus) is the most well-known and largest, inhabiting swamps and slow-moving rivers across South America. Adult female Green Anacondas average 4.6 meters (15 feet 1 inch) in length, while males are smaller, averaging about 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches). Adult Green Anacondas weigh between 30 to 80 kilograms (66 to 176 pounds).
The Yellow Anaconda (Eunectes notaeus) is a smaller relative, found in southern South America. Females of this species reach a maximum length of 4.6 meters (15.1 feet), with average adults measuring between 3.3 and 4.4 meters (10.8 to 14.4 feet). Yellow Anacondas weigh between 25 to 35 kilograms (55 to 77 pounds), though specimens over 55 kilograms (121 pounds) have been observed.
Two other species, the Dark-Spotted Anaconda (Eunectes deschauenseei) and the Bolivian Anaconda (Eunectes beniensis), are considerably smaller. Dark-Spotted Anacondas, found in northeastern South America, measure between 1.2 to 2.3 meters (47 to 91 inches) from snout to vent for adults. Bolivian Anacondas reach lengths of 3 to 4.2 meters (10 to 14 feet) and weigh between 22 to 32 kilograms (50 to 70 pounds). These size differences highlight why the Green Anaconda is almost always the subject of “biggest on record” discussions.
The Verified Record Holder
When discussing the largest anaconda on record, scientific verification is paramount, as many claims lack evidence. The Green Anaconda, Eunectes murinus, holds the record for the heaviest snake in the world. While the reticulated python can be longer, the Green Anaconda’s bulk makes it the most massive.
One of the most reliably documented Green Anacondas was a female specimen examined by Dr. Jesús Antonio Rivas, a herpetologist who studied over 1,000 anacondas. It measured 5.21 meters (17 feet 1 inch) long and weighed 97.5 kilograms (214 pounds 15 ounces). Another notable captive specimen, housed at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, grew to 6.27 meters (20 feet 7 inches) by 1960. At this length, it weighed 91 kilograms (200 pounds 10 ounces).
Field reports also note impressive sizes. A female Green Anaconda encountered by herpetologist William W. Lamar in Colombia in 1978 was estimated to be 7.5 meters (24 feet 7 inches) long and weigh between 136 and 180 kilograms (300 and 397 pounds). An unconfirmed but notable claim from 1962 involves a snake in Brazil measured at 8.46 meters (27 feet 9 inches) with a girth of 112 centimeters (3 feet 8 inches). Exceptional individuals can exceed 6 meters, but most adult Green Anacondas do not surpass 5 meters (16 feet) in length.
Addressing Unverified Claims
Stories of enormous anacondas, often far exceeding scientifically verified sizes, are widespread. These anecdotal reports describe snakes reaching lengths of 15 meters (50 feet) or more. Such claims, while captivating, lack concrete evidence like verifiable measurements or photographic proof. Many accounts stem from folklore or misidentification, where the snake’s size is exaggerated.
For example, a report from 2016 claimed construction workers in Brazil found a 10-meter (33-foot) anaconda weighing 399 kilograms (880 pounds), but this was debunked. Historical accounts from early European explorers mentioned anacondas over 18 meters (60 feet) long, but these remain unconfirmed. The lack of physical specimens or consistent scientific observations for these extreme sizes casts doubt on their veracity. The prevalence of such stories highlights human fascination with giant creatures rather than factual biological records.
Challenges in Measuring Giant Snakes
