Unlike social bees such as honeybees or bumblebees, each female alkali bee constructs and provisions her own nest, making them solitary insects.

These bees are exceptionally efficient at pollinating alfalfa flowers due to a specialized technique called “tripping.” Alfalfa flowers have enclosed reproductive parts, requiring a bee to apply pressure to “trip” the flower and release pollen. Unlike honeybees, which often avoid this, alkali bees readily perform it, making them highly effective.

A single female alkali bee can pollinate 1,000 to 2,000 alfalfa flowers daily. This efficiency provides economic benefits for the agricultural industry, particularly in regions like the Pacific Northwest, where they contribute to millions of pounds of alfalfa seed production annually. Their synchronized emergence with the alfalfa bloom maximizes pollination efficiency, leading to higher seed yields for farmers.

Conservation and Management

Alkali bee populations face challenges such as habitat loss and the use of pesticides in agricultural landscapes. Their specific nesting requirements, including moist, salty soils, make them vulnerable to changes in land use and practices like plowing.
