The above-ground portion usually reaches 5 to 15 centimeters in height, though its runners can extend up to 30 centimeters.
Small, star-shaped flowers emerge from May to August, greenish-white and measuring 6 to 10 millimeters across. These subtle blooms appear singly or in small clusters nestled among the foliage. Sea sandwort flowers are often functionally unisexual. Following flowering, the plant produces spherical, 3-valved capsules, 6 to 10 millimeters long, which resemble small peas and contain tiny seeds for water dispersal.
Habitat and Growth Conditions
Sea sandwort is commonly found in temperate and arctic coastal regions across Europe, Asia, and North America, including the British Isles and Canada. It primarily inhabits sandy beaches, dunes, and gravelly or stony seashores, growing just above the mean high tide line. This plant is highly adapted to its challenging environment, tolerating salt spray, strong winds, and shifting sands.
Its thick, fleshy leaves with a waxy coating are a key adaptation, helping the plant retain freshwater, resist salt, and protect it from abrasive wind and sand. Sea sandwort is a halophyte, tolerating saline conditions. The plant’s extensive underground rhizome system allows it to spread and anchor firmly in mobile substrate, even withstanding partial burial. It thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils.
Uses and Ecological Significance
Sea sandwort offers practical uses and plays an important role in coastal ecosystems. The young shoots and leaves are edible, consumed raw or cooked. They offer a flavor reminiscent of cucumber skin and pea shoots and are rich in vitamins A and C. Historically, in Iceland, the plant has been fermented in sour whey, similar to a sauerkraut-like preserve.
Ecologically, sea sandwort is recognized for its role in coastal stabilization. Its dense mats and rootstock help bind sand and shingle, preventing erosion and aiding in embryo dune formation. This stabilization allows other plant species to colonize coastal habitats. It also provides shelter for sand hoppers and other crustaceans, which serve as food for seabirds. Its small flowers attract various pollinators, including small bees, hoverflies, and ants.
