The Scent and Natural Sources of Jasmone

When a plant is damaged, such as by an herbivore, injury triggers an increase in jasmonate levels at the wound site. This surge initiates defensive actions, including the production of compounds that make the plant less appealing or toxic to herbivores, such as proteinase inhibitors or polyphenol oxidase.

Jasmonate signaling also prompts plants to release volatile organic compounds. These chemicals act as a distress signal, attracting natural predators of attacking insects. Neighboring plants can also detect these signals, activating their own defense systems in anticipation of a threat, demonstrating plant-to-plant communication. As a semiochemical, jasmone can act as an attractant or repellent for various insects, influencing their behavior.

Commercial and Industrial Applications

Human industries widely utilize jasmone for its distinctive aromatic qualities. The fragrance industry is a primary consumer, incorporating jasmone extensively in perfumes, colognes, and various scented products like soaps, lotions, and candles. Its inclusion, even in trace amounts, can impart a warm, deep floral note, enriching the complexity of high-quality floral fragrances, particularly those aiming to replicate or enhance jasmine and tuberose scents.
