This concentration can function as a disinfectant for various surfaces, effectively killing bacteria and fungi. It is also used to sanitize kitchen items like cutting boards and dishes.

Beyond general cleaning, hydrogen peroxide plays a role in personal hygiene. Diluted solutions can be used as a mouth rinse to help reduce plaque, freshen breath, and address early signs of gum disease. Some teeth whitening products also incorporate hydrogen peroxide to clean stains from within the tooth structure. Additionally, hydrogen peroxide is a common ingredient in hair bleaching products to lighten hair.

Safe Handling and Storage

Handling hydrogen peroxide requires careful attention to safety, regardless of its concentration. It is important to wear protective gear such as rubber gloves and safety glasses or goggles to prevent contact with skin and eyes. If hydrogen peroxide splashes into the eyes, flushing them immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes is necessary, followed by prompt medical attention. Skin contact may cause temporary whitening and stinging, which should be rinsed with ample water.

Ingesting hydrogen peroxide, even at household concentrations, should be avoided. If swallowed, drinking water immediately to dilute it and seeking medical attention are recommended, but vomiting should not be induced.
