Changes in bowel habits that persist for more than a few days warrant attention. Consult a healthcare professional if there are consistent changes in the frequency, consistency, color, or shape of stools. For example, deep red, black and tarry, clay-colored, or pale stools require evaluation.

Severe symptoms that require immediate medical attention include blood or mucus in the stool, severe abdominal pain or cramping, unexplained weight loss, or persistent nausea and vomiting.
