An AIRFLOW Prophylaxis Master is a dental device that provides a modern alternative to traditional teeth cleaning. It performs a protocol called Guided Biofilm Therapy, a new approach to preventive dental care. Instead of relying on manual scraping tools, this system uses a controlled stream of air, warm water, and a fine powder to manage dental biofilm. This technology is less abrasive on tooth enamel than conventional polishing.
The Guided Biofilm Therapy Procedure
The cleaning process follows a systematic, eight-step protocol. The procedure focuses on managing dental biofilm, the primary cause of cavities and gum disease. The appointment begins with an assessment of your teeth and gums, followed by the application of a colored disclosing solution. This solution stains the biofilm, making it visible to both you and the hygienist.
Once the biofilm is identified, the hygienist uses the AIRFLOW handpiece to remove the colored film, surface stains, and newly formed calculus from the tooth surfaces, tongue, and gums. For areas that require deeper cleaning, such as periodontal pockets between 4mm and 9mm, a tool called the PERIOFLOW is used to clean beneath the gumline.
After the biofilm has been removed by the air-polishing tools, the clinician performs a final check for any remaining hard deposits, known as calculus or tartar. If any calculus is found, an ultrasonic instrument called the PIEZON is used for its removal. The procedure concludes with a final check to ensure all biofilm and calculus have been eliminated and to screen for cavities.
Key Technologies of the Device
The AIRFLOW Prophylaxis Master unit integrates three technologies to achieve a comprehensive cleaning. The AIRFLOW® tool projects a controlled jet of warmed water, air, and a powder. Its fine, Erythritol-based powder removes biofilm and stains from teeth, restorations, and implants without damage. The adjustable water temperature adds a level of comfort for patients.
For cleaning deeper periodontal pockets, the device uses the PERIOFLOW® handpiece and nozzle. This attachment is designed to safely deliver the powder and water mixture into pockets deeper than 4mm. Its design allows the clinician to remove biofilm from sensitive areas around natural tooth roots and dental implants without causing trauma to the surrounding tissues.
The third component is the PIEZON® ultrasonic scaler, which is used to remove hard calculus deposits that the AIRFLOW powder cannot. The PIEZON instrument features controlled, linear movements. This motion, combined with a power-adjusting feedback system, removes tartar efficiently with less discomfort than traditional scaling.
Patient Suitability and Experience
This type of dental cleaning is beneficial for a wide range of patients. Those with sensitive teeth find the use of warm water and the gentle powder spray more comfortable than traditional methods. It is also effective for cleaning around orthodontic appliances, as the powder can access the area around brackets without needing to remove any components. The fine powder also safely cleans dental implants, crowns, and veneers without scratching them.
The patient experience is more pleasant compared to conventional cleanings. The lack of scraping sounds and sensations associated with manual scalers can reduce dental anxiety. The procedure is non-invasive and does not require any numbing shots, allowing patients to remain comfortable throughout the appointment.
Despite its broad applicability, there are situations where this treatment may not be appropriate. Individuals with severe respiratory conditions, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), may be advised against it due to the aerosolized powder. A known allergy to Erythritol, the main ingredient in the powder, is another contraindication. Your dental professional will conduct a health assessment to determine if this cleaning method is the right choice for you.
