What Is a Swine Fish? Habitat, Diet, and Behavior

The term “swinefish” refers to a fascinating marine fish known for its unique appearance and behaviors. Found across various warm coastal waters, this fish plays a role in its ecosystem and is of interest to humans.

Identifying the Swinefish

The name “swinefish” is most commonly associated with the Hogfish, scientifically known as Lachnolaimus maximus. It belongs to the wrasse family, Labridae, a diverse group of marine fish. While some may also loosely apply the “swinefish” moniker to certain triggerfish species within the Balistidae family, the Hogfish is the primary subject when discussing this specific common name due to its pronounced snout.

Its body is laterally compressed, appearing high and somewhat round. The fish’s elongated snout is particularly notable, giving rise to its common name because it resembles a pig’s snout used for rooting. Hogfish also have striking red irises. Their coloration varies significantly with age and sex; juveniles and females typically display pale gray, brown, or reddish-brown hues, while males are often marked with a prominent black spot behind their pectoral fins. This species can reach lengths of up to 90 centimeters (35 inches) and weigh around 11 kilograms (24 pounds).

Where Swinefish Live

Hogfish are native to the Western Atlantic Ocean, inhabiting a broad range that stretches from Nova Scotia in Canada down to northern South America. Their distribution includes the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas, and coastal areas off Florida and Bermuda.

These fish prefer structured marine environments, commonly found around reefs, particularly those rich in gorgonian corals. They also frequent rocky bottoms and seagrass beds, which provide both shelter and foraging opportunities. Hogfish typically dwell in depths ranging from approximately 3 to 30 meters (10 to 100 feet), where they access abundant food sources and protection within complex underwater structures.

Swinefish Diet and Behavior

As carnivores, Hogfish primarily consume a variety of invertebrates found on the seafloor. Their diet includes mollusks, such as snails and mussels, as well as crabs and sea urchins. They are equipped with strong jaws and specialized teeth that enable them to crush the hard shells of their prey.

Hogfish employ a distinct foraging strategy, using their elongated snouts to root around in sandy or muddy substrates to unearth hidden crustaceans and mollusks. Behaviorally, these fish often live in small groups, typically consisting of one dominant male and several females. Like many wrasses, Hogfish are known for their unique reproductive behavior as protogynous hermaphrodites. This means they are born as females and can later change sex to become males, with the largest female in a group often undergoing this transformation to assume the dominant male role. After fertilization, their pelagic eggs hatch within about 24 hours, and the larval stage can last for several weeks before juveniles settle into suitable habitats.

Swinefish and Humans

Hogfish are valued for several reasons, particularly in fishing. They are commonly caught for food and are considered a quality food fish, often prepared as ceviche. Their firm, white flesh is sought after in many coastal communities. Recreational fishing for Hogfish is also popular throughout their range.

Beyond their culinary appeal, these fish contribute to the health of marine ecosystems. Some juvenile hogfish, such as the Spanish hogfish, can act as cleaner fish, removing parasites from other marine organisms.
