A semirigid penile implant is a medical device surgically placed inside the penis to address erectile dysfunction (ED), particularly when other treatments have not been successful. This type of implant provides a constant state of firmness, allowing for sexual activity without the need for inflation or other external manipulation.
How Semirigid Implants Work
Semirigid implants function through a mechanical principle. Each implant consists of two flexible rods, crafted from silicone or similar biocompatible materials. These rods are surgically inserted into the corpora cavernosa, the two chambers within the penis that normally fill with blood to create an erection.
The inherent rigidity of these rods keeps the penis in a constantly firm, yet bendable, state. This design allows the penis to be manually positioned for sexual activity or bent downwards for concealment. Unlike inflatable implants, semirigid devices do not require a pump or fluid reservoir, offering a simpler, unchanging solution for maintaining rigidity.
Determining Candidacy
Individuals are considered for a semirigid penile implant when they experience severe and persistent erectile dysfunction that has not responded to less invasive treatments. Such prior treatments might include oral medications, penile injections, or vacuum constriction devices. This surgical option is often recommended for those with underlying conditions like severe diabetes-related ED, ED following prostate cancer treatment, or Peyronie’s disease.
Beyond medical necessity, overall health is important, requiring candidates to be in good health and free from active infections. A willingness to undergo surgery and realistic expectations about the implant’s outcomes are also important considerations. Patients should understand that the procedure is permanent.
The Surgical Process
The implantation of a semirigid penile prosthesis is performed as an outpatient procedure under general or spinal anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision, often at the base of the penis or in the scrotum. Through this incision, the two flexible rods are carefully placed within the corpora cavernosa.
The surgeon customizes the size of the implant to fit the individual’s anatomy. Once the rods are correctly positioned within the erectile chambers, the incision is closed with sutures. The entire procedure usually takes about one to one and a half hours.
Daily Life with an Implant
After receiving a semirigid implant, the penis will always maintain a state of firmness. For sexual intercourse, the penis can simply be positioned upwards. When not in use, the implant can be bent downwards towards the body for discretion and comfort under clothing.
Patients report the appearance and sensation of the penis remain largely unchanged, and the ability to achieve orgasm and ejaculate is unaffected by the implant. However, the implant does not increase penis size or girth, and some individuals may perceive a slight shortening of the penis post-surgery. While the penis remains firm, the head of the penis may not become as hard as the shaft.
