What Is a River Otter? Features, Habitat & Diet

The North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) is a semi-aquatic mammal known for its playful nature and adaptability in both water and on land. These otters are members of the weasel family, Mustelidae, and belong to the genus Lontra, which encompasses all New World river otters.

Distinctive Features

River otters possess a streamlined body, with a long, muscular frame, short legs, and a flattened head, contributing to their agile movement through water. An adult river otter typically measures 66 to 107 centimeters (26 to 42 inches) in body length, with a powerful, tapered tail making up about one-third of its total length. These mammals generally weigh between 5 and 14 kilograms (11 and 30.9 pounds), with males often being larger than females.

Their dense fur provides insulation and waterproofing. This coat consists of a thick undercoat that traps air and longer guard hairs that repel water, keeping the otter warm and dry. Their fur is exceptionally dense. Their webbed feet, equipped with non-retractable claws, aid in propulsion through water and allow for grasping slippery prey.

River otters rely on developed senses to navigate their environment and locate food. Their long, stiff facial whiskers, known as vibrissae, are sensitive, detecting vibrations and changes in water currents to find prey. Their eyes are adapted to see both underwater and on land, with a third eyelid providing protection when submerged. While their underwater vision is effective, they are nearsighted on land. Their ears and nostrils can also close tightly to prevent water entry during dives.

Life in the Water

River otters inhabit various aquatic environments across North America, including freshwater rivers, lakes, ponds, wetlands, and coastal marine areas like estuaries and marshes. They thrive in locations with a consistent food supply and prefer unpolluted water. These semi-aquatic animals establish their dens, often called holts, near water sources. These burrows frequently have multiple entrances, including one located underwater, allowing for discreet access. Otters may also utilize abandoned burrows created by other animals, such as beavers.

As carnivores, river otters primarily consume fish, but their diet is diverse and opportunistic. They also feed on crustaceans like crayfish, amphibians such as frogs and salamanders, freshwater clams, mussels, snails, small turtles, and aquatic insects. Occasionally, they may prey on small mammals or birds. Otters typically hunt alone or in pairs. Larger food items are often brought ashore to be eaten. Their high metabolism necessitates frequent feeding throughout the day.

River otters exhibit a blend of solitary and social behaviors. While they may live alone or in pairs, they often gather in groups for social interaction, particularly mothers with their offspring. They engage in playful activities such as sliding on muddy banks or snow, chasing, rolling, and diving. These antics strengthen social bonds and help younger otters refine their hunting skills. They communicate through various vocalizations, including whistles, yelps, growls, chirps, squeaks, and chuckles, some of which can be produced underwater, and mark territories by urinating, defecating, or rubbing scent glands on rocks and trees.

These animals are strong swimmers, capable of reaching speeds of up to 13 kilometers (8 miles) per hour and diving to depths of 11 meters (36 feet) or more. They can hold their breath for several minutes, with reported durations of up to eight minutes. Their flexible bodies allow for sharp, sudden turns during aquatic pursuits. Although primarily aquatic, river otters are also adept on land, able to run at speeds of up to 24 kilometers (15 miles) per hour.

Conservation Outlook

The North American river otter is currently classified as “Least Concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, their populations faced declines in the 1800s and early 1900s. This was largely due to unregulated trapping for their fur, habitat loss and degradation, and widespread water pollution.

Conservation efforts, coupled with improvements in water quality resulting from legislation like the Clean Water Act, have led to a rebound in river otter populations. Reintroduction programs have played a role in their recovery, with over 4,000 otters relocated to 21 to 23 U.S. states since 1976. This restoration is considered a notable wildlife recovery achievement in North America.

Despite their improved status, river otters still encounter threats. Ongoing habitat degradation, continued water pollution, and accidental trapping pose challenges to their populations. Traffic accidents are also a concern in areas with human development. Due to their sensitivity to environmental contaminants, river otters are often considered an indicator species, reflecting the overall quality of aquatic habitats.
