An independent samples t-test assesses if two distinct groups have different means, while a paired samples t-test can compare two related measurements from the same subjects. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) extends this to compare average values across three or more groups, determining significant differences among multiple group means.

The Pearson correlation coefficient measures the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two continuous variables. Regression analysis, which examines relationships between dependent and independent variables, also falls under parametric tests. What Are Non-Parametric Tests?

They are useful for nominal or ordinal data, or when continuous data are highly skewed or from small sample sizes. Non-parametric methods analyze data based on their ranks or signs, making them less sensitive to extreme observations or outliers.

Several non-parametric tests serve purposes similar to their parametric equivalents. The Mann-Whitney U test is a non-parametric alternative to the independent samples t-test, used to compare two independent groups. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test is the non-parametric counterpart to the paired samples t-test for comparing two related samples. For comparing more than two independent groups, the Kruskal-Wallis test serves as a non-parametric alternative to one-way ANOVA.

The Spearman correlation coefficient measures the strength and direction of a monotonic relationship between two variables, often used with ordinal data or when Pearson correlation’s linearity assumption is violated. The Chi-square test assesses relationships between categorical variables or compares observed frequencies to expected frequencies. How to Choose the Right Statistical Test?

The measurement scale of the data is a primary consideration. Data are classified into four levels: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. Nominal data are categorical without inherent order (e.g., fruit types). Ordinal data have ordered categories with unequal intervals (e.g., satisfaction ratings).

Interval data have ordered categories with equal intervals but no true zero (e.g., Celsius temperature). Ratio data include a meaningful absolute zero, allowing for ratios (e.g., height). Parametric tests generally require interval or ratio data, while non-parametric tests accommodate nominal or ordinal data.

Data distribution is another determinant, especially whether it approximates a normal distribution. Many parametric tests assume a normally distributed population. To assess normality, researchers use graphical methods like histograms or Q-Q plots, which visually compare the data’s distribution to a normal curve. Statistical tests for normality, such as the Shapiro-Wilk test (for smaller samples) or Kolmogorov-Smirnov (for larger samples), provide a more objective assessment. If data significantly deviate from normal, particularly with smaller sample sizes, non-parametric tests are more suitable.

The research question or hypothesis guides the type of comparison or relationship. If the goal is to compare means between groups, a t-test or ANOVA might be considered. If data do not meet parametric assumptions for comparing means, non-parametric equivalents like the Mann-Whitney U test or Kruskal-Wallis test are appropriate. If the research aims to explore relationships, correlation or regression analyses are used, with Pearson (parametric) or Spearman (non-parametric) chosen based on data characteristics.

Finally, sample size influences the choice. Very small samples make it challenging to determine data distribution, often favoring non-parametric tests. However, larger samples allow some parametric tests to handle slight deviations from normality due to the Central Limit Theorem. The decision-making process involves identifying data type, evaluating its distribution, aligning with the research question, and considering sample size.
