Beyond fish, cephalopods like squid and octopus are also significant food sources, particularly for offshore dolphin species. Some dolphin species, especially those in coastal or riverine environments, may also consume crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs, though this is less common than fish and squid.

Hunting Techniques

Dolphins employ a range of sophisticated strategies to capture their prey. Echolocation is a primary tool, allowing them to locate food even in murky waters or at night. They emit high-frequency clicks and interpret the returning echoes to create a detailed sound map of their surroundings, pinpointing the location, size, and shape of prey.

Cooperative hunting is an effective method. This can involve herding schools of fish into tight “bait balls,” making it easier for individual dolphins to charge through and feed. Another specialized cooperative technique, seen in some bottlenose dolphins, is “mud-ringing” or “silt netting,” where dolphins create a circular wall of mud by beating their tails on the seafloor, trapping fish within the muddy barrier. Fish attempting to escape the mud often leap into the air, where other dolphins are waiting to catch them.

Factors Influencing Diet

A dolphin’s diet is not uniform across all species or geographical areas, demonstrating remarkable adaptability. Different dolphin species often exhibit specialized dietary preferences; for instance, oceanic dolphins primarily eat fish and squid, while river dolphins may consume more crustaceans and small river fish. The availability of prey varies significantly by ocean basin, water depth, and whether the habitat is coastal or offshore, directly influencing what dolphins consume in a given location.

Age and size also play a role in dietary choices. Younger or smaller dolphins might target smaller, easier-to-catch prey, whereas larger, more experienced individuals can pursue bigger and faster fish. Seasonal fluctuations in prey populations, often due to migration or breeding cycles, lead to shifts in a dolphin’s diet throughout the year.

While fish and squid provide most of their hydration, dolphins also produce metabolic water internally from the breakdown of food. This combination ensures they stay hydrated without needing to drink seawater, which would be harmful due to its high salt content.
